Food Basket Volunteer Opportunities

FoodBasketLogoNovember is here and that means Food Basket Distribution is near.  Each year Catholic Charities is blessed to offer many of our clients all the fixings/groceries for a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner.

We need your help in two ways.

First – in distributing the groceries on Saturday, November 23.  We have 3 shifts available this year:

7:00 am to 9:00 am
9:00 am to 11:00 am
11:00 am to close (about 1:30 pm)

This event will happen rain or shine, cold or warm – so dress appropriately for inside and outside. You may also be helping with the Trav’s Coats for Kids program and/or a few other needed projects on campus if we have enough volunteers that day.  We will also be making Christmas Cards for the Christmas Food Basket Distribution in December – that is a great project for kids of all ages!!!!  Come ready to work and able to be flexible in your assigned duties.

Second – we are also asking for your help in another way.  Can you bring items to help us give away more complete sacks of groceries?  We have all of the turkeys and hams donated, but we want to do more.  We can use help on the other items we give to each family.  If you come to help, would you consider bringing some or all of these items to stretch the number of people we can help?  The items we give to each family (besides the meat and produce) includes:

1 Box of Stuffing
1 Cake or Brownie Mix
2 Sleeves of Crackers
1 Pie Crust
1 large can of Pumpkin Pie Filling
1 can of Sweet Potatoes/Yams
1 can of Chicken Broth
1 can of Cranberry Sauce or Fruit Cocktail
2 cans of Green Beans
1 package of Dinner Rolls

If you can bring these items when you come to volunteer – it will add to what we have to feed the “multitudes”. Your gift will be a tremendous part of the “loaves and fishes” that will be given to the people of God that day. If you cannot bring anything – that is fine – bring yourself and your gift of time and energy will be a part of the abundance.

Can you and your family/group/friends come help distribute to the over 1,000 families in need?  If so – e-mail John O’Neill at with the number who will come, your contact info (e-mail and phone), and which shift you would prefer to take.  Please try to be flexible if your initial shift choice is full.  I will contact you to confirm which shift you are assigned to and other details.   The week before the event you will get an e-mail about parking and other details of the day.

Can’t make the November 23rd distribution date? We’ll be doing it again for Christmas! Let us know if you’d like to be put on the list for Saturday, December 21st.

Thank you in advance for your gift of self to others in need!
