Front Desk Volunteer Needs: Bilingual Receptionists


Position Description:
Greet guests and clients as they enter the building. Give directions on where they need to go and help them find the right department for their needs. Answer the phone, and transfer the caller to the department they ask for. The volunteers at the front desk are often clients’ first impression of Catholic Charities so be sure to be kind, courteous and smile as you interact with them.

Volunteers requested for the following schedule: Recurring

Mondays – CRITICAL NEEDAttendant 1: Bilingual volunteer needed from 6pm to 8pm.

Mondays – Attendant 2: Volunteer needed from 2:30pm to 8pm. (This shift can be broken up into smaller shifts.)

Tuesdays – Attendant 2: Bilingual volunteer needed from 4:30pm to 8pm. (This shift can be broken up into smaller shifts.)

Wednesdays – CRITICAL NEEDAttendant 1: Bilingual volunteer needed from 4:30pm to 8pm. (This shift can be broken up into smaller shifts.)

Ideal attributes: Spanish speaker, retired police officer or security guard, student who has lots of studying to do or someone who would like to bring a book to read.

Disaster Relief Office Volunteer Needs: Clerical Work

Position Description: The Disaster Relief & Rural Outreach Coordinator could greatly benefit from the help of an administrative assistant volunteer. This person would help with clerical work such as data entry, copying and misc. projects. This person would be a regular, reoccurring volunteer who preferably commits to two afternoons a week. Wednesdays are unavailable due to the Coordinator’s travel schedule.

Volunteers requested for the following schedule: Recurring 

Thursdays & Fridays – 1pm-4:30pm

Ideal attributes: Experience working in an office. Computer savvy, excel and word proficient, ability to file and organize paperwork.

Emergency Assistance Volunteer Needs: Front Desk Receptionist

Tuesdays – 4:30pm-6:30pm

Ideal attributes: Experience working in customer service or with people. Ability to treat each and every person with dignity and respect. Knowledgeably be able to explain certain processes and policies. Someone who is not easily intimidated by some of our more, “gruff” personality types of our clients and can remain as friendly, hospitable and personable as possible.

Garden Program Volunteer Needs: Gardeners


Position Description:
Be responsible for the planting and tending to the Catholic Charities’ garden. Herbs, fruits and vegetables grown in the garden are used to prepare lunches for clients on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Volunteers requested for the following schedule: Recurring but seasonal

2 volunteers each day of the week, all day.

Mondays – 9am to 4:30pm

Tuesdays – 9am to 4:30pm

Wednesdays – 9am to 4:30pm

Thursdays – 9am to 4:30pm

Ideal attributes: Gardening experience a plus, but no experience necessary, as long as there is an interest in gardening.

Kitchen Program Volunteer Needs: Food Prep and Serving


Position Description:
Help staff prepare and serve lunch on Tuesdays and Thursdays to everyone on campus, as well as boxed lunches for students on Wednesdays.

Volunteers requested for the following schedule: Recurring

Tuesdays – 10am to 2pm- 2-3 volunteers

Wednesdays – 11am to 1pm-2 volunteers

Ideal attributes: Cooking experience a plus, but no experience necessary, as long as there is an interest in cooking and food prep.

Human Resources Volunteer Needs: Clerical Work


Position Description:
The Human Resources Department is looking for a volunteer to assist with clerical work such as data entry and light filing.

Volunteers requested for the following schedule: Recurring (1 volunteer)

Anytime Mon-Fri 9am to 4:30pm. Looking for a regular volunteer commitment of 4-5 hours per week to be completed in one shift.

Ideal attributes: Volunteer must have experience working in a Human Resources department. Must be able to hold confidences and handle confidential paperwork professionally and appropriately.

Education Program Volunteer Needs: Teachers & Tutors


Position Description: 
Help staff teach the many classes in Spanish that we provide to our clients every week. They are GED classes in Spanish.

Volunteers requested for the following schedule: Recurring

GED & ESL Teacher Needs: Teacher

Mondays & Wednesdays:

 8:30am to 10am-ESL- would like as many volunteers as possible, but would like them to commit to both Monday and Wednesday to be consistent for the class.

• 10am to 12pm-GED in Spanish- would like as many volunteers as possible, but would like them to commit to both Monday and Wednesday to be consistent for the class.

• 6pm to 8pm-GED & ESL classes- would like as many volunteers as possible, but would like them to commit to both Monday and Wednesday to be consistent for the class.

Tutor Needs:

Tutors needed in evenings in weekends for our Madonna House and St. Elizabeth Lodge residents.

Ideal attributes: Teaching experience. Important to know they will probably start out as a tutor and work their way up to a teacher.

Residential Program Volunteer Needs: House Mother for Madonna House


Position Description:
Many of our residents in the Madonna House are with us because they come from bad home environments. They are pregnant and scared. Most of them have never had a nurturing mother figure in their life who taught them the necessities to be successful on their own. You would provide them with love and friendship. You would patiently teach them important life skills like how to cook, how to calm down a crying baby, drive them to doctor’s appointments, etc. Any of things a mother would typically do for her pregnant daughter during these important months of pregnancy.

Volunteers requested for the following schedule: Recurring

Mondays – 1 volunteer from 8am to 12pm, 1 volunteer from 1pm to 4pm

Tuesdays – 1 volunteer from 8am to 12pm, 1 volunteer from 1pm to 4pm

Wednesdays – 1 volunteer from 8am to 12pm, 1 volunteer from 1pm to 4pm

Thursdays – 1 volunteer from 8am to 12pm, 1 volunteer from 1pm to 4pm

Fridays – 1 volunteer from 8am to 12pm, 1 volunteer from 1pm to 4pm

Ideal attributes: Must take VIRTUS training before beginning. Must be a woman who is maternal, caring and patient. Will help teach residents life skills like learning how to cook, learning how to calm crying babies, driving them to doctor’s appointments, etc.

Emergency Assistance Volunteer Needs: Support Systems Volunteers (Warehouse, Food Pantry and Clothing Store)


Warehouse

Position Description: Help unload food donations and sort through clothing donations. Hang clothes on hangers, organize by size.

Volunteers requested for the following schedule: 5-10 volunteers needed, recurring

Every weekday 9am to 4:30pm, Tuesdays until 6:30pm and the 3rd Saturday of each month from 9am to 11am.

Ideal attributes: Ability to follow direction and be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment. Warehouse volunteers sort and hang clothing donations and unpack and sort food donations in a warehouse that is cold in the winter and hot in the summer.

 

Food Pantry

Position Description: Each client who comes to Catholic Charities for emergency assistance for food meets with a case worker who determines the amount of food they will receive. They are given a ticket that lists the items they have been approved for. The client will bring their ticket to the food pantry. A volunteer greets them and takes their ticket inside the food pantry. The volunteer pulls the specified items off of the shelves and collects them in bags for the client. When finished, the volunteer pushes the grocery cart out to the client’s care and loads the bags into their vehicle for them.

Volunteers requested for the following schedule: 5-10 volunteers needed, recurring

Every weekday 9am to 4:30pm, Tuesdays until 6:30pm and the 3rd Saturday of each month from 9am to 11am.

Ideal attributes: Ability to follow direction and be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment. Food pantry volunteers must be able to read, push a grocery cart and lift up to 20 lbs.

 

Clothing Store

Position Description: Each client who comes to Catholic Charities for emergency assistance for food or clothing meets with a case worker who determines the amount of food and clothing they will receive. They are given a ticket that lists the items they have been approved for. After a client has received their food items, they will go to the clothing store to start selecting outfits. Clothing store volunteers help by hanging clothes on hangers, placing clothing on racks, helping clients find clothing items they need, and some light cleaning

Volunteers requested for the following schedule: 5-10 volunteers needed, recurring

Every weekday 9am to 4:30pm, Tuesdays until 6:30pm and the 3rd Saturday of each month from 9am to 11am.

Ideal attributes: Ability to follow direction and be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment. Patience as you help put together outfits for the clients.

 

Migration & Refugee Services Volunteer Needs: Clerical Work


Position Description: 
Migration & Refugee Services desperately needs volunteers who either very computer savvy or have experience working in an office. Each family they process has thousands of pages of paperwork required to be completed by the government. The employees need your help to organize, file, copy, sort mail, audit files, etc.

Volunteers requested for the following schedule: 5 volunteers, recurring

Every weekday 9am to 5pm. Ideally, one volunteer per day of the week and that volunteer could stay most of the day, and work that same day every week for consistency.

Ideal attributes: Office experience, computer savvy, ability to file and organize paperwork, ability to follow direction and be comfortable working in a fast paced environment. Patience dealing with clients whose first language is not English. Does not have a problem interacting with Muslims.

Migration & Refugee Services Volunteer Needs: Cultural Orientation Teachers


Position Description:
 Migration & Refugee Services is looking for one or two volunteers who would be able to teach the cultural orientation classes for our clients twice a month. They do not have to be a teacher, just possess the desire to teach. A translator is provided at each class session. They do not have to come up with the material, the curriculum and lesson plans are provided by the government.

Volunteers requested for the following schedule: 2 volunteers, recurring

1st & 3rd Fridays of each month, all year. Classes are 9:30am to 2pm.

Ideal attributes: Teaching experience, cultural orientation experience. Patience dealing with clients whose first language is not English. Does not have a problem interacting with Muslims. Can follow curriculum and lesson plans provided by the government.

Migration & Refugee Services Volunteer Needs: Apartment Set Up


Position Description:
Migration & Refugee Services is looking for several volunteers to be on call to help with apartment set-ups for refugees. If accepted, volunteers would be put on a call list depending on their availability. The next time an apartment would need to be set up during their availability, they will be contacted to see if they can help.

Volunteers requested for the following schedule: As many as possible, flexible.

Set-ups could happen any day and at any time of day.

Ideal attributes: Ability to move furniture, sometimes up or down stairs. Desire to help refugees resettle here by moving the furniture into the apartment, making the bed, putting dishes and cookware in the kitchen, etc.

Interview could be required before placement.

 

Migration & Refugee Department Volunteer Needs: Airport Greeters


Position Description:
Migration & Refugee Services is looking for several volunteers to be on call to help greet refugees at the airport when they arrive. Flights mostly arrive during the evenings. If accepted, volunteers would be put on a call list depending on their availability. The next time a refugee was slated to arrive during their availability, they will be contacted to see if they can help.

Volunteers requested for the following schedule: As many as possible, flexible.

Greetings could happen any day and at any time of day and usually last between 30-60 minutes.

Ideal attributes: Patience in sometimes waiting for delayed flights, ability to be patient when dealing with clients whose first language is not English. Desire to help refugees.

Interview could be required before placement.

 

Pregnancy Services Volunteer Needs: Female Arabic Translator

Position Description: Pregnancy Services (Blessed Mother Theresa Women’s Health Services) is looking for one female volunteer to translate for our Arabic-speaking client. It will be only once per month for about 20 minutes while patient is seen by OB provider in our Catholic Charities clinic.

Volunteers requested for the following schedule: 1 volunteer, 1 shift per month lasting about 20 minutes until patient gives birth to baby in June 2016. Shift would be during business hours. Volunteer would then only be needed if/when we receive another Arabic-speaking client.

Ideal attributes: A woman who is comfortable being in the exam room with our client as they receive their monthly pregnancy exam and who can translate from Arabic to English (for anything the client would like to say to the medical staff) and translate from English to Arabic (so the medical staff can provide medical care to our patient).

Interview could be required before placement.
